Fishery Information

Butterwell Farm is a popular destination in the Southwest for sea trout and salmon game fishing. It has approximately half a mile of double bank water and half a mile of single bank water, with 18 holding pools. The river is divided into equal beats daily depending on the number of rods and conditions.

What size do the fish go to?

The fishery offers a good chance of catching sea trout in excess of 5lb on night fly and large autumn salmon. The ten-year average catch is 39 salmon and 90 sea trout per season.

What tactics work well?

During the sea trout season, from 1st May to 31st August, night fly-fishing is typically the only permitted method. However, if the water levels are high and other conditions permit, daytime fly-fishing for salmon and sea trout may be allowed. Once the water is low and clear, and a reasonable number of sea trout have gathered in the pools, fishing reverts to night fly-fishing only for sea trout. During the salmon season, from 1st September to 15th December, fly fishing, spinning, and bait fishing are allowed by day. All salmon are required to be released unharmed.
