Fishery Information

Dungloe Lough is a freshwater lake in the northwest of Ireland. It is located in north County Donegal in the Rosses fishery and is part of the Rosses Fishery system which consists of 8 loughs. The lough measures about 1.5 km long and 1 km wide and has five named islands. It is situated 1-mile east of Dungloe town and is fed on its eastern side by neighbouring Lough Craghy, draining westwards into the Dungloe River. The Lough offers some great fishing and is stocked early in the season with larger brown trout. In July, the sea trout arrive, enhancing the fishing experience.

What size do the fish go to?

The lough holds a good stock of small wild brown trout and sea trout. The majority of the sea trout are Finnock and average ¾ lb but the lake can produce fish up to and over 4lb. A 6lb sea trout was taken during the 2000 season and a 4.5lb brown trout was taken on a Loch Ordie fly during the same season.

What tactics work well?

The most productive time of day for fishing is often early in the morning and late in the evening. The favoured areas for fishing are along the west shore and at the mouth of the river, to the east of the lough. Bank fishing is permitted but access and angling in this area can prove difficult. Tully Lake, a part of this fishing system, is best known for sea trout and fishes well in July if there has been a wet season.

What facilities are on site?

There is a fine boat jetty where boats are available to hire. Permits for fishing and boat hire for the Lough can be obtained from Charlie Bonner’s Tackle Shop in the town. On the main island, there is a hut where one can shelter and have their refreshments.

Is parking available?

As the lough is situated just 1-mile east of Dungloe town, it’s likely that parking facilities are available nearby, though the specifics of parking for the lough are not detailed in the provided information.
