Poppy Hill Lakes Information

Poppy Hill Lakes lies close to the Bedfordshire town Henlow, and is owned by the Letchworth Garden City Angling Association. The club purchased the fishery in the 1970’s and the lakes are well-stocked and established.

Lake 1 is the main lake at Poppy Hill and is a 2.8acre lake often used as a match lake. The depth is around 6ft throughout and there are a total of 32 swims in a mixture of settings.

Fish caught in Lake 1 are primarily carp. Poppy Hill is a mixed fishery with a variety of species across the lakes. As well as carp the lakes contain a good head or roach and bream, plus skimmers and tench. Rudd are also present in certain lakes, and it’s worth knowing that Lake 1 was recently restocked with bream and carp.

Facilities at Poppy Hill Lakes are limited yet the swims are well sited and there are wooden bays for match fishing.

What size do the fish go to?

Poppy Hill Lakes is a popular fishery as the ponds are well-stocked. Bream of around 9lb were stocked in 1999 and more in 2006. Club members maintain there are bream into double figures in Lake 1.

Carp in Lake 1 reach in excess of 20lb, and tench of more than 10lb have also been landed.

Parking is available at Poppy Hill Lakes and there is a nearby railway station at Henlow Bridge.
