Fishery Information

This fishery is run by Royal Forest of Dean Angling Club.

Waterloo is a picturesque and peaceful fishing spot located in the woods near the Mierystock crossroads. It was once a busy coal mine known as Waterloo Colliery, and a memorial to those who lost their lives at the colliery can be found adjacent to the lake. The site’s heritage is evident with a spoil heap to the west and some steel cables in the ground.

The pond at Waterloo experienced a sudden leak over a decade ago due to a severe winter, which resulted in the evacuation of the fish population. The pond was subsequently relined, checked, and refilled from a local stream. It was then restocked with fish.

Waterloo Lake, like all RFODAC waters, is leased from Forestry England. Access to the lake is through a gated track on the south side of the road, approximately half a mile west of the Brierley “Jet” petrol station. The entrance is just after the brow of a hill, so caution is advised. If approaching from the Coleford direction, the entrance will be on your right, around 600 yards past the Mierystock crossroads.

For those with a Forestry key, it is possible to open the gate and drive to the small car park closer to the lake. Please be mindful not to block the turning loop.

Waterloo Lake is not used for club matches. It offers several fishing platforms and areas along the bank that are ideal for a day’s fishing. During the summer, the lake can have a significant amount of lilies, and the club makes efforts to control their growth. Work parties are organized, and anglers are welcome to join in to help maintain the fishability of the lake.

What size do the fish go to?

Waterloo Lake is stocked with roach, rudd, bream, tench, and a small number of carp. The specific sizes of the fish are not mentioned, but anglers can expect to encounter these species in the lake.

What tactics work well?

Given the presence of roach, rudd, bream, tench, and carp in Waterloo Lake, various tactics can be effective depending on the target species. Anglers may find success with a range of traditional fishing methods and baits suitable for these species.

What facilities are on site?

It is recommended to bring along any necessary fishing equipment, supplies, and amenities needed for a day of fishing.

Is parking available?

Yes, parking is available at Waterloo Lake. A small car park closer to the lake itself can be accessed by those with a Forestry key. It is important not to block the turning loop or obstruct any access points.
