In the beautiful town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, is Sunrise Lakes, home to three lakes: two for recreation and one for matches.
The South Lake is the original lake built on this property in 2003. It covers a total area of 2 1/2 acres, has one small island in the middle, and has depths that range from 3 feet to 8 feet. The fact that it has a decent average depth makes it a productive fishing spot throughout the year. The far bank on the south side features trees along its entire length that protect it from high winds coming from the south. When it is warm and the evenings are drawing in the fish, the bankside vegetation provides excellent cover for margin fishing.
The North Lake, dug around the same time as the South Lake, provides excellent cover for the fish along the bankside, and its depths range from three to eight feet. It is a more intimate and rustic type of lake, but it still provides all of the amenities the larger pleasure lake does. It is roughly one and a half acres and shaped like a kidney. A canalized section is at the back of a large island, ideal for great fishing.
The Match Lake is a new feature at Sunrise, and it features 60 pegs and depths ranging from 3 to 9 feet. It is open for reservations of fishing competitions and “knock-ups” that include at least six anglers. Mirror Carp, F1s, Crucian Carp, Bream, Chub, Ide, Barbel, Roach, Rudd, Perch, and Tench are part of the lake’s stocking.
What size do the fish go to?
About 15,000 fish are in each pleasure lake, containing various fish of varying sizes and species. Tench, green and golden to 5 pounds, Bream from skimmers to fish up to 6 pounds, Barbel up to 3 1/2 pounds, and Crucian Carp to 2 pounds.
Most carp, including Mirrors, Commons, and Ghost varieties, ranging in size from 1 pound to 12 pounds, with the larger carp reaching up to about 17 pounds. Roach and Golden Rudd up to 1 pound each, Perch up to 2 1/2 pounds, Chub and Ide up to 2 1/2 pounds each.
