Fishery Information

The Pendle Burnley & District Angling Association is in charge of the Walverden Reservoir, found in Nelson in the county of Lancashire. The depths in the medium sized reservoir range from eight to twelve feet.

The fishery contains a healthy population of carp, tench, and bream. There are also Roach and perch but numbers are few.

The reservoir has a closed season from the 14th of March all the way through the 15th of June, inclusive, and it reopens at midnight on the 15th of June. There are options for day tickets and season tickets available at the bank.

What size do the fish go to?

Carp to over 20lb, Tench to 6lb and Bream to 10lb

What tactics work well?

Because carp are the most sought after fish in the reservoir, they have evolved to become more cautious. Normal carp tactics can be used with a variety of rigs and bait, but boilies should be the primary bait of choice.

Even though Bream can reach double digits in length, they are not targeted very frequently by anglers. It is worth giving feeder tactics a shot with the typical baits, such as worm, maggot, and sweetcorn, and adding your preferred flavoring to ground bait to catch Bream. The same tactics work well for perch and roach, which are challenging to find.

Waggler or stick float, bread flake fished just on bottom or 6 inches over depth, small balls of ground bait laced with lots of hemp and sweet corn are the techniques for catching tench. If you want to catch more tench, try fishing with a mixture of corn and bread.

The season ticket grants access to night fishing, and if you purchase a second rod permit, you will be able to make use of two rods.
