Fishery Information

One of the Cottington Lakes Waters, Alder Lake is a 7-acre body of water more open than the others, and located in Lewdown, Okehampton. It is full of characteristics such as gravel bars, islands, and many trees and plants that hang over the water.

The lake is teeming with several fish species. Most notable are Common and Mirror Carp that are in the double digits, some impressively large tench and bream, as well as good stocks of roach, rudd, perch, and chub. It also has a natural stock of Trout.

The depth of Alder Lake ranges from around five and a half feet to nearly twelve feet in certain areas, and it has twelve well-spaced pegs.  Anglers tend to concentrate towards either end of the lake because they believe that this is where they will have the highest chance of catching fish. Additionally, it is common knowledge that casting into the wind yields the most successful catches.

What size do the fish go to?

Carp can go up to 25lb

Bream can go to the excess of to 9lb

Tench to 8lbs

Perch to 2lbs

What tactics work well?

During the summer months, the best fish can be caught using sweetcorn, pellets, or flesh as bait, while during the colder months; the best bait is maggots or worms. Because it has the potential to be a bountiful body of water, anglers are only allowed to make use of a maximum of two rods.
