Fishery Information

This fishery is run by The Tonbridge Angling Club & Fish Preservation Society.

Ballast Pit is one of the oldest still waters of the Society, dating back to around 1842. It was originally dug to provide material for the nearby Tonbridge to Redhill railway embankment. The lake spans four acres and is situated alongside the historic London to Dover railway line. In the past, the lake was shared between the Angling Society and the Tonbridge skating club, as it would freeze solid enough for ice skating during the winter months.

What size do the fish go to?

Ballast Pit is popular among Carp anglers due to its significant population of Carp. Anglers can find Carp of various sizes, including doubles, twenties, and some reaching over 30lbs. The water also holds a good head of large Bream and Tench. Notably, 100lb bags of Bream have been recorded in the past. Other fish species in the lake include quality Roach, Rudd, Perch, and Pike. In recent years, the Society has introduced Crucian Carp, and specimens exceeding 4lb have been recorded and photographed.

What tactics work well?

Various tactics are successful at Ballast Pit. For Carp, anglers often use boilies due to the quantity of bait going into the water. Groundbait feeder can lead to large nets of Bream. For silver fish, pole fishing and sprayed maggots can attract a variety of species to the swim. All methods can be effective, and anglers have experienced explosive moments when a Carp or large Tench picks up the hook bait.

What facilities are on site?

Ballast Pit offers a serene and attractive fishing environment. The water has an average depth of four feet, with a silt bottom and some weed and lilies. Senior members have the privilege of night fishing on this water. There are three disabled angler platform swims where bivvies are not allowed, and no bivvies are permitted up to the red marker post on the field side of the lake. Parking is available at Haysden Country Park car park, with applicable car parking charges. Please check the car park opening times displayed at the entrance.
