Fishery Information

Kirkwood Cottages are in the village of Dalton, close to Lockerbie. Golfing, cycling, and fishing are some activities you can enjoy at the property, alongside accommodation in stunning cottages, breathing in fresh and clean air in the garden, and the barbecue facilities. Fishing is by far the most popular activity.

Kirkwood owns a stretch of the river Annan known as the “Kirkwood beat.” It rents out an additional stretch of river known as the “Jardine beat” further upstream. Salmon and sea trout make up most of the catch in these beats. In addition, the facility manages a small loch primarily utilized by novice anglers and is stocked with trout.

During certain times of the year, anglers who are staying in the cottages have the opportunity to fish for chub and grayling on the Annan. The best time for chub and grayling fishing is during the winter, between the middle of November and the end of February.

What size do the fish go to?

Chub are often above 5lb and grayling over 2lb. There have been catches of grayling weighing over 4 pounds and chub weighing over 6 pounds. Wild brown trout can also grow to be quite large; anglers have hauled in brownies weighing between 6 and 8 pounds. At least one salmon weighing over 20 pounds is caught during the course of a season. The sea trout weigh an average of 2 pounds.

What tactics work well?

Fly or Bait fishing- There is a prohibition on the use of live bait. The best alternatives include maggots, bread, cheese, and luncheon meat; and any fish caught must be released. Fishing is not always simple, but there is always a chance of catching large fish.
