Fishery Information

Wharncliffe Fly Fishery is just north of Sheffield and promises a wonderful day’s fly fishing for anyone. Whether you’ve been fly fishing for years and have all the gear, skill and knowledge, or you’ve never done it before, head to Wharncliffe Fly Fishery. There are nice and easy casting spots on this reservoir, but there are some challenging areas too. You can hire a boat and get closer to the fish to present your fly if you need to. The reservoir is 7.5 acres, so while it is massive, targeting fish from the bank isn’t impossible.

What size do the fish go to?

Wharncliffe Fly Fishery is very well stocked, and this stock is maintained regularly to keep it strong and healthy. You can catch rainbow, blue and brown trout here to about 5lbs, but the occasional monster comes out too. Every so often, a fly angler hooks a trout here, has a long battle and banks a double-figure beauty.

What tactics work well?

There is very little natural fly life at this water, so choosing flies aren’t as simple as going to the lake and seeing what’s hatching. Greenfly do work well on this water, but speak with other anglers and the bailiffs while you’re there. They will know the flies that have been working and are always happy to lend a hand. Also, check out the Wharncliffe Fly Fishery website, as there is plenty of info on there about the flies the fish love.
