Fishery Information

Wombwell Dam is a wonderful fishery in South Yorkshire. There are two lakes on-site, aptly named the top and bottom lakes. The top lake is nearest the car park, the bottom one isn’t. Both of the lakes hold a good head of fish, but the bottom one is reserved for the larger residents of the site. The bottom lake is still a great day’s fishing but is more geared towards match-style and pleasure fishing.

What size do the fish go to?

The fish in the bottom lake are nice and varied, but the carp go to about 25lbs; the locals suggest there are bigger carp than this, though. There is also plenty of nice roach and rudd to be had. Also, some carp anglers have caught bream to double-figures on this lake too.

The bottom lake lacks the larger carp, but don’t let that put you off. There are hundreds of f1s in this lake, carp to double-figures and plenty of bream, roach and rudd too.

What tactics work well?

The bottom lake is exclusively fished by carp anglers, pretty much. So all carp tactics work well here. However, we’d suggest using some corn, hemp and pellets over your spot. The fish love them, and this mix could see you get an early bite.

For the top lake, match-style tactics are the way to go. Pole and method feeding with pellets always seems to get the f1s in the mood, but don’t ignore maggots and corn either.
