Fishery Information

This fishery is run by Derby Railway Angling Club.

This well-established former railway ballast pit has a rich history dating back over 150 years. The pool spans approximately 5 acres and features varying depths. Two sides of the pool drop quickly to a depth of 10-12ft, while the opposite sides slope gradually. The pool is surrounded by mature alder trees, creating a picturesque setting. A large established lily bed adds to the natural beauty of the fishery.

What size do the fish go to?

The carp range in size from mid doubles to mid 20s. During the summer months, the carp can often be spotted on the surface or roaming the margins. In addition to carp, the pool also holds perch, tench, and a few pike. The specific sizes of these fish may vary, offering a diverse angling experience.

What tactics work well?

When targeting the carp in this pool, it is recommended to have a feel around with a bare lead prior to positioning any rigs. This helps to identify any underwater obstacles, such as sunken branches, tree trunks, or the sunken corrugated iron platelayers hut. The margins are particularly productive for carp fishing in the warmer months. As for other species like perch, tench, and pike, common tactics for these fish such as using appropriate baits, rigs, and techniques can be employed.

What facilities are on site?

Anglers should come prepared with their own fishing equipment and supplies for a comfortable fishing session. It is advisable to bring items such as seating, shelters, tackle boxes, and other necessary equipment to ensure an enjoyable experience.

Is parking available?

Access to the pool is via a stoned track through a locked gateway. There is parking available behind the pegs on one side of the pool. Anglers can conveniently park their vehicles and access the fishery for a hassle-free fishing experience.

It is worth noting that the water level of the pool has fluctuated in recent years due to adjacent gravel workings. However, these workings have ceased, and the water table is expected to re-establish. This will allow for the determination of the optimum level of the pool and the creation of safe pegs for anglers.
